Having studied Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art, I went on to complete a PGCE in Secondary Art and Design at the Institute of Education, University of London. My time is now divided between working on commissions, teaching and archiving.
Being lucky enough to spend six years living on a canal boat, I have sailed around most of the waterways of England and Wales, making much of my work about the places I passed through as I went along. However this journey seems to have finally come to an end and for the time being I have settled in North Devon.
My work has been described as four dimensional because it is made in relief, in 3D, with the extra dimension of time. Unsatisfied with flat surfaces, I have always tried building paintings outwards. Initially I achieved this using papier mache, but now I work in a whole range of materials from polystyrene to fibreglass and cement.
I would never want to become trapped in one particular style of making work because art to me is always about exploring and experimenting.
In order to push myself technically, I am currently working on a show called 'Industrious Britain' which will be a visual exploration of a journey I have made around the UK. My aim is to complete ten pictures all made in a different material. I am trying to express my interpretation of each place in the choice of medium that I use.
Much of the rest of my work is produced to private commission.
Alongside making pictures I also work with Giffords Circus, the Cotswolds' cult award winning vintage travelling circus, for whom I act as set designer, archivist and education officer. In conjunction with the 2008 tour of their show Caravan I coordinated their education and outreach programme.
I have also spent time archiving for Mark Borkowski, the legendary PR man and for Emma Bridgewater the brilliant pottery designer, at her factory in Stoke on Trent. Last year I was also appointed artistic director at Winterwell, a boutique festival in Gloucestershire and I also dressed tents at the Glastonbury Festival.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you are interested in buying a piece or in having one commissioned.
